Tradescantia virginiana - Virginia Spiderwort

Deep purple flowers with bright yellow stamens create a beautiful contrast. Prefers nutrient-rich soil but can tolerate gravel/sand. Deadheading fading flowers can bring about a second flowering in late summer. Each flower opens only for one day but the plant blooms in succession, creating a long bloom time. 

When the stem is cut, the liquid it secretes becomes thready and weblike as it hardens, hence the common name. Mildly toxic, can cause skin irritation upon contact and should be handled with gloves.
