Rhus aromatica is a dense and low growing deciduous shrub which spreads by root suckers. In Autumn, its green leaves turn into attractive shades of orange, red, and purple. It is called fragrant sumac because when its leaves and twigs are bruised, they become aromatic. While its leaves resembles that of poison ivy, it is not poisonous whatsoever. This resilient shrub is tolerant of a wide range of soils except for poorly drained soil.
