Juncus effusus - Soft Rush

Morphology/Growth Habits: This is one of the most widespread rush species worldwide! Smooth, cylindrical stems grow in clumps and stretch upwards. No foliage. Small, green-yellow flowers bloom in late summer, followed by seeds. Evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, although some stems may die back in the winter.

Habitat/Best Environments: Grows in wetlands, riparian zones, bogs, and marshes. This is a go-to plant for green infrastructure in Gowanus, and you can find it in many of our rain gardens! While it grows in wet ecosystems, it can also tolerate some periods of drought. 

Ecological relationships: The strong stems of this plant provide shelter and nest materials for many animals! Rootstalks are eaten by muskrats. Many insects also feed on this rush. This plant also has many relationships with humans*, being used for medicine and tea. Its stems are also used across the world as a strong material for weaving, cordage, basketry, netting, and more! In Europe, the piths of the stems were also soaked in grease to make a cheap alternative for candles—rushlights.
