Like other false indigo species, Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' is a drought tolerant grassland plant that tolerates poor soils. Characterized by a large tap root, baptisias take a few years to establish and prefer to be left in one place. Once established this plant is worth the wait, with smoky purple flower spikes that bloom in the spring and give way to attractive seed heads. 'Purple Smoke' is a hybrid of two native false indigios, Baptisia australis and Baptisia alba, discovered by chance in the 1990s.
