Amsonia hubrichtii - Blue star
Morphology/Growth habits: This wildflower may take a couple years to fully bloom as it is a slow grower, but the wait is worth it! Clusters of light blue, star-like flowers come in late spring and pair beautifully with this perennial’s fine, feathery foliage. Leaves also turn a golden yellow in the fall, making it a beautiful addition to your garden through the seasons. Has erect growth and forms clumps. Pinching after flowering helps maintain uprightness, and cutting back after flowering can encourage bushier form.
Height: 2-3 ft.
Light: Full sun - part shade
Water: Medium
Bloom color: Light blue
Bloom time: April-May
Habitat/Best Environments: Grows in open woodlands. Moderate tolerance for drought, but prefers medium moisture. Tolerant of poor soils. Too much shade or rich soil may result in flopping. Great choice for borders, slopes, and rock gardens. Mass planting creates the best effect for flowering.
Ecological relationships: Flowers attract many pollinators, especially butterflies! Host plant for several moth and butterfly species, including the Snowberry Clearwing.
Blue star contains a milky sap inside that makes it resistant to deer & rabbits, and can be mildly toxic to humans. Wear gloves when cutting back or pinching to avoid irritation.
