Morphology/Growth habits: This wildflower has a beautiful combination of delicate, star-like blue flowers that appear in spring and thin, glossy foliage that turn gold in the fall. Upright growth and clump-forming. Compared to A. hubrichtii and A. tabernaemontana, this species of bluestar has wider leaves with a glossier appearance, hence the name ‘illustris’. This plant grows easily from seed and can take pruning/cutbacks even in summer. Flower blooms last about 2-3 weeks.

Height: 2-3 ft

Sun: Full - Partial Shade

Water: Medium

Bloom Color: Light Blue

Bloom Time: April-May

Habitat/Best Environments: Found in open habitats such as floodplains and wetlands. This plant thrives in medium-moist soil but can tolerate a variety of soil and sun conditions, including clay-heavy soil, making it a great addition to any urban garden.

Ecological relationships: Flowers attract many pollinators, especially butterflies and moths. Toxic sap from inside the stems make A. illustris resistant to herbivory. This sap is mildly toxic to humans, so please wear gloves when pruning to avoid skin irritation.
