Morphology/Growth Habits: This perennial’s common name comes from the strong resemblance its flowers have to the head of a turtle! Abundant, terminal clusters of white, two-lipped flowers with pink tinges bloom in late summer and fall. Textured, dark green foliage grows on strong, upright stems. Spreads primarily by seed and slowly by rhizomes.

Height: 2-3 ft

Light: Part Shade

Moisture: Medium-Wet

Bloom color: White

Bloom time: Aug-Oct

Habitat/Best Environments: Found in streambanks, flood plains, marshes. Grows best in partial shade, and too much shade may cause flopping. Works well in damp locations such as water garden peripheries and shade/bog gardens.

Ecological relationships: An important host plant providing nectar for butterflies, bumblebees, and ruby-throated hummingbirds. It is a favorite of bumblebees, who have the size and strength to open up the lipped flowers! Larval hosts for Baltimore Checkerspot. Also supports the Common Buckeye. Pest and disease resistant.

*This wildflower has many medicinal uses in various Indigenous medicines including to treat fevers, sores, and as a contraceptive.

*Please soil test and do proper research before growing a plant for human consumption.
