Carex grayi - Gray Sedge
Native to North America, Carex grayi can be found growing in low-lying areas near rivers, swamps, and bottomland forests. The unique looking blooms that resemble spiked clubs, can be used as attractive additions to flower arrangements. Grows best in moist fertile soil in full sun. Propagates by seeds in the fall or root division in the spring. It makes an excellent addition to a rain garden and is impactful in the landscape when planted in large groups. It can also be grown in containers. Although no part of this plant is gray, it's name honors Asa Gray (1810-1888), a leading American botanist and author of such great works as the notable Gray's Manual of Botany (1848; 8th edition 1950).
