Morphology/Growth habits: This deciduous shrub is native to swamps and bogs but can also tolerate dry areas. When in bloom, this shrub produces small, white-petaled flowers with pink stamens in clusters that contrast nicely against its dark green leaves. With time, it will grow multiple stems and suckers, and typically has a rounded top. Leaves turn bright red in the fall, adding an autumnal interest to your garden. Also produces black berries.

Height: 3-6ft

Light: Full Sun-Part Shade

Moisture: Medium

Bloom color: White

Bloom time: May

Habitat/Best Environments: Native to swamps and bogs, but can tolerate many soil conditions. Produces the most fruit in full sun.

Ecological relationships: Provides habitat and food for birds and small mammals. *Berries are edible for humans but are very tart and astringent when eaten raw, hence the common name. Typically used to make jams, jellies, and pies instead. Mixed infusion of the berry is also used in Potawatomi medicine for colds.

*Please soil test and do proper research before growing a plant for human consumption
