Lowlands Nursery
Grown in Gowanus
The Lowlands Nursery offers plants that are well-adapted to the urban conditions of Gowanus, celebrating the local ecosystem while educating and engaging the community in environmental stewardship. We are a mission-driven, not-for-profit community nursery run by Gowanus Canal Conservancy.
Our plant inventory centers on native urban-adapted plants, which we sell to individuals, civic institutions, and landscape designers. As a mission-driven nursery we support stewardship of the Gowanus lowlands by providing plant material for installations and engaging students and volunteers in direct plant care. All proceeds support Gowanus Canal Conservancy’s mission-based education and stewardship programs.
Get in touch with us by emailing plants@gowanuscanalconservancy.org.
Open Hours & Online Orders
We are open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 11:00AM-4:00PM*. Online inventory will be updated regularly. We highly encourage people to shop in-person. If that is not an option, online orders can be picked up during open hours.
We are located at: 25 9th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215, right next to the F/G train Smith-9th Street station and the 9th Street Bridge. We do not have parking on our site so please plan accordingly.
*The Lowlands Nursery is subject to closure due to unpredictable and inclement weather, holidays, and unforeseen events. We will try our best to send out updates via social media whenever possible.
Compost
We will not be distributing compost this year due to budget cuts for composting. Thank you for understanding.
Pots + Bags
We recycle pots! If you have any unwanted and clean plastic plant pots or Lowlands Nursery plant labels, we will gladly reuse them. Just drop them off during open hours or email us to coordinate at plants[at]gowanuscanalconservancy[dot]org.
This year, we are also collecting clean reusable bags (similar to what you might get from Fresh Direct or Target) for customer use.
Discounts
We offer discounts for Schools, Community Gardens, Block Associations and GCC Members!
Schools, community gardens, and block associations can apply to receive a 25% discount for plantings in school/community gardens or the public realm. To receive this discount, we ask that you upload documentation of your affiliation using the application link (documentation could be a photograph of the school/community garden, public garden, or tree pit to be planted; a membership card; a school letter, etc).
If you are a school interested in applying for the Community discount as a school, please note this is mainly for private and public grade schools looking to buy plants for either their own school gardens or for projects in the public realm. If you are a university, this discount only applies for gardens or green spaces accessible to the public.
GCC Members receive a 15% discount and do not need to fill out a separate application. If you are a member and have not received a discount code, please forward your membership receipt to plants[at]gowanuscanalconservancy[dot]org. Not a member yet? Become a member today!
