Ilex glabra has flat, glossy, and dark green leaves that typically survives through Winter making it an attractive evergreen. In Spring, if flowers are pollinated, they produce very small black berries that can survive throughout Winter to early Spring unless birds eat them. Prefers acidic, rich, and consistently moist soils in full sun but can tolerate wet soil and adaptable to both heavy and light soils.
Historically, indigenous people dried and roasted inkberry leaves to brew tea. Berries can also be used for honey and it is highly sought after.
